Pan Am at War chronicles the airline's historic role in advancing aviation and serving America's national interest before and during World War II. From its inception, Pan American Airways operated as the "wings of democracy," spanning six continents and placing the country at the leading edge of international aviation. At the same time, it was clandestinely helping to fight America's wars. Utilizing government documents, declassified Freedom of Information Act material, and company documents, the authors have uncovered stories of Pan Am's stunning role as an instrument of American might: The airline's role in building air bases in Latin America and countering Axis interests that threatened the Panama CanalCreating transatlantic and trans-Africa supply lines for sending Lend-Lease equipment to BritainCooperation with Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese nationalist government to pioneer the dangerous "Hump" route over the HimalayasThe dangerous seventeen-thousand-mile journey that took President Roosevelt to the high-stakes Casablanca Conference with Winston ChurchillThe daring flight that delivered uranium for the atomic bomb. Filled with larger-than-life characters, and revelations of the vision and technology it took to dominate the skies, Pan Am at War provides a gripping unknown history of the American Century.
Pan American World Airways could be considered a corporate Cinderella―a rags-to-riches-and-back-again phenomenon. From its founding in 1927 and its relatively obscure inauguration as a mail carrier on a 90-mile mail run from Florida’s Key West to Cuba, Pan Am’s route system grew to span the globe. The company that would eventually become famous for its blue-and-white-world logo grew into a conglomerate of hotels, airlines, business jets, real estate, a helicopter service, and even a guided missiles range division. But financial problems plagued Pan Am in its last two decades, and in 1991, Pan American World Airways ceased flying after 64 years of service. The story of Pan Am is as much the story of president Juan T. Trippe as it is an account of airplanes, pilots, flight attendants, andglamorous destinations. As the company moved throughout the world building airfields from jungles, crossing oceans, and forcingthe development of new airplanes, it was Trippe’s airline and his vision. A global pioneer, Pan Am was the first airline to use radiocommunications, to employ cabin attendants and serve meals aloft, and to complete an around-the-world flight. The company’sachievements were legendary, but its failures, tragedies, and disasters were also part of a complex corporate life.

The flying-boat represents an important chapter in this history. Used in modest numbers at the outset, this beautiful craft was later to be developed and exploited significantly by Pan American - indeed, no airline company made more of the water-based aircraft, nor used it to greater effect, than this world-renowned company in the first twenty years of its operational life. This book is testament to that use. Through the carriage of mail and then passengers, Pan American built an ocean-crossing network using a fleet of flying-boats which became famous as the Pan American Clipper Ships. In the process of this development, aviation records were constantly set, ranging from the first airline to cross the Pacific, the first to encompass South America in its routes, and the first to offer fare-paying, scheduled services across the North Atlantic. The new service offered travelers, government officials, and even heads of state, unparalleled levels of comfort and luxury, and such innovations had to be accompanied by a good share of business acumen, promotional skill and high regard for passenger comfort. Revealing portraits are presented here of the key pioneering figures who pushed the technology ahead, and ultimately laid the foundations for the global air transport network and passenger services that we know today. The Pan Am Clipper Ships belong to one of aviation history's most inspiring and magical periods. Illustrated with over 100 archive photographs, this impressive book is a tribute to a technical wonder that continues to fascinate and captivate today and which, in its t...
This is not a book about heroism, nor is it adventurous or melodramatic. It is the honest story of a typical airline pilot who worked for the world's most experienced airline, Pan American. He tells his story in a cheerful manner, sharing his lifetime as a pilot with the readers whom he seeks to take into his confidence, explaining some of the problems of the regulatory problems, the frustrations with bureaucracy, the irritations as well as the joys of working with his fellow crew members.
In 1927, American entrepreneur Juan T. Trippe founded what would later become Pan American World Airways, one of the world's most prominent airlines of the 20th century. From the very first airmail flight flown from Key West to Cuba, Trippe provided leadership and innovation that put Pan Am at the top of the commercial airline industry. His global pioneering spirit expanded the world's reach for the masses while at the same time provided the most glamorous of air-travel experiences. The rise and fall of an American empire is examined in this full-color postcard history of Pan Am.
"This book celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit that launched the world's most famous commercial airline, Pan American World Airways."
In 1927, Pan American Airways was modestly launched with a contract to fly the U.S. Mail from Key West to Havana, Cuba. During 2017, friends and supporters of Pan Am commemorated this landmark event with the publication of a special 90th Anniversary volume that looks back at the history of the airline that helped mold the international commercial airline industry of today. Pan Am - Personal Tributes to a Global Aviation Pioneer is published by the Pan Am Historical Foundation (PAHF), a 501(c)(3) educational foundation, established in 1992 to preserve and promote the legacy of Pan American World Airways. A true collector's item, this commemorative hardcover edition measuring ten and a half by twelve and a half inches is an oversize coffee-table hardcover book and features a colorful dust jacket. It contains more than 80 stories written by former Pan Am employees and international media friends who had personal experience with many of Pan Am's key events during its history. The anthology recounts the history of Pan Am from its first flight to its very last and is illustrated with more than 300 images, many in full color, from a variety of sources including PAHF's unique photo library. It also includes posters, promotional brochures, timetables and baggage tags.
Juan Trippe, the first and last aviation tycoon in history, learned to fly in the rickety machines of World War I, when the sky appealed only to daredevils, and his life expectancy could have been counted, probably, in days. He was as star struck as any of the other young aviators of the day, but he was also a Yale educated banker’s son who believed the world was crying out for air travel but didn’t yet know it, and he thought he saw a way to turn this risky game into a business. At 25 he began to found airlines, all of which failed, but in 1927 he took over floundering Pan American, which had only one route, 90 miles from Key West to Havana. Within eight years at great risk and against fantastic odds Pan Am had regularly scheduled service across the Pacific, and after that Trippe thrust his tentacles into all of Latin America, into Europe, Africa, Australia, China. He was a nerveless, sometimes vicious competitor who bought up or drove out of business anyone who got in his way—President Roosevelt once referred to him as a “Yale educated gangster”---until he had built Pan Am into the by far the mightiest airline that had existed up to that time.

I Am Pan
Mischievous from the moment he emerges howling and screeching from his mother's womb, Pan, god of the wild, creates pandemonium wherever he goes. Noise and confusion follow him as he steals arrows from Artemis, conceives panic, tricks the moon into falling in love with him, and saves the world from the monster, Typhon. With panache and a wicked pair of horns, Pan spreads chaos and laughter on the way to becoming Mount Olympus's most lovable pest. From Mordicai Gerstein, Caldecott Medal-winning author of The Man Who Walked Between the Towers, comes an irresistible picture book about Greek mythology's wildest, wackiest god. Gerstein's high-spirited paintings and rollicking sense of humor create an accessible introduction to an unforgettably vivacious hero.
The growth of commercial air transportation and the number of passengers flying today can be laid at the feet of one of the great aviation pioneers, Juan Trippe, who began a crusade to create an air network that would link America to the world. The Yale graduate was absorbed by flight and airplanes. He established Pan American World Airways with a fleet of flying boats linking the U.S. Latin and South America, Asia and Europe. International travel in the 1940s was limited to the rich. Trippe had a different vision. He wanted to make international travel affordable for ordinary folk and introduced a new class of service--tourist class--on the New York-London route with a round-trip fare of 275, half the price set by the International Air Transport Association. Not only was IATA unhappy, Britain quickly shut its airports to Pan Am, forcing it to land at Shannon, Ireland. Trippe ultimately prevailed in bringing air travel to a large segment of the population. The story of Trippe, told by award-winning author Daniel Alef, is a significant chapter in American aviation. Howard Hughes and TWA were his nemesis; Lindbergh a close friend. And Trippe also gave us the 707, ushering in the jet age, and later the 747. The Boeing Stratocruiser was a double-decked luxury airliner that offered lounges and cocktails to its passengers. Pan Am Flight 202/28 had completed the first leg of its El Presidente tour before taking off in the early morning hours of April 29, 1952. Having already flown to Rio De Janeiro from Buenos Aires, Argentina, the airliner was on its way to New York with its next stop in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Pilot Albert Grossarth transmitted an "all is well" communication some 900 miles from Rio. This was the final message sent by him. The aircraft missed a scheduled check in in Carolina, Brazil before it became overdue in Trinidad around 10 a.m. (EST).
